The National Research Council has formed a panel to review, "The Use of
Chimpanzees in Biomedical and Behavioral Research." The committee’s charge
is to "conduct a study and issue a letter report on the use of chimpanzees
in NIH-funded research that is needed for the advancement of the public’s
health. The primary focus will be animals owned by the National Institutes of
Health, but will also include consideration of privately owned animals that are
currently financially supported by NIH."
