ASPET Congressional Education/Grassroots Network
In 1998, ASPET initiated a new public policy initiative to further the interests of pharmacologists. ASPET Alert is the grassroots network
that will serve our membership and alert them to important federal legislative and regulatory matters impacting your research. Issues such as
federal funding for biomedical and pharmacological research, animal testing
issues, need to be better represented by
the those who are most concerned and affected by developments in Washington, D.C.
Your voluntary participation in this effort would not be a
burden on what we know is an already busy schedule. You would receive periodic legislative alerts notifying you on a specific issue and clearly
stating what the action on your part should be. This would include writing a letter or in time sensitive cases, telephoning a Member of Congress’
office. You would receive ASPET’s e-mail alerts only when warranted. Due to the nature of legislation and the Congressional schedule, there
may be times when you would not hear from us for several months. At other times you might receive alerts one, two, three times or more a
month.
Your response to ASPET’s legislative alerts is strictly voluntary. We realize there are a number of reasons why you might not be able to respond
to specific alerts. That is why it is important that ASPET’s grassroots network include as many individuals interested in pharmacological
research as possible. The more individuals participating means more individuals responding, increasing the impact of our message on Capitol
Hill. Currently over 300 ASPET members in 42 states participate in ASPET Alert.
