NIGMS RFA for Short Courses in Integrative and Organ Systems
  Pharmacology

The following Request for Applications issued by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences will be of interest to ASPET members.  RFA GM-05-006 solicits proposals for Short Courses in Integrative and Organ Systems Pharmacology.  This RFA is available at the following URL:

http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-GM-05-006.html

This RFA is a result of ASPET's efforts to promote training in support of systems and integrative whole organ pharmacology.  We hope it will be the first of several efforts by NIH to increase support for this area of research.

NIGMS is not looking for a large number of proposals in response to this announcement.  Only two to three courses will be funded.  Rather, they are looking for a modest number of high quality proposals that bring together the interests of a large number of institutions  to form coalitions of at least regional, but preferably, national scope.

This RFA was issued after extensive discussions with ASPET and other scientific organizations which have actively promoted renewed research and training in this area for several years.  It is hoped that the presently funded NIGMS training grant programs will be involved in these short courses as sources of faculty, possibly facilities, and particularly students.  Contact information for the PIs of NIGMS funded Pharmacological Sciences training grants are listed at the following

URL:   http://www.nigms.nih.gov/funding/PS_predoc.html

Information about others interested in this activity might be obtained by contacting ASPET for suggestions.  It is suggested that you may wish to contact Jim Bernstein jbernstein@aspet.org.

Intensive organizational activity is needed in the next few weeks to meet the June 25 proposal due date.  This RFA due date is the latest that could be accommodated and still allow the first courses to be offered in the summer 2005.  There is no required "letter of intent"; however, anyone interested in applying should contact Peter Preusch at NIGMS at the contact information below to discuss their ideas.
