Mid-Atlantic Pharmacology Society (MAPS): Brief Background and Mission Statement

MAPS is a constituent society of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET) and was formed about 13 years ago by a group of local pharmacologists (Warren Chernick, Jay Roberts, Paul Bianchi, and Bryan Smith).  Their aim was to provide scientists in our geographical area (New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware) a forum for meeting on a regular basis to discuss recent advances in pharmacology and therapeutics.  A major purpose of MAPS was to be a "student-friendly" organization.  With this purpose in mind, graduate students were encouraged to join at reduced membership rates.  The interaction of students and postdoctoral fellows with local industrial and academic scientists was strongly encouraged and, in order to help achieve this, the annual poster competition was instituted.  The poster competition is featured at the Spring meeting.

Another purpose of the organization was to honor the contributions of the renowned local pharmacologist, George B. Koelle.  Dr. Koelle was first honored in 1991 with an entire meeting devoted to the discussion of topics related to his research.  Each year, the society selects one speaker to deliver the George B. Koelle Lecture at Fall meeting.  Dr. Koelle usually presented the speaker with the award certificate and very much enjoyed having this role.  With the passing of Dr. Koelle, the society expects to modify the annual tribute to him in some way.

Each meeting consists of a featured topic of interest.  Usually 4 to 6 scientists (some local, some from distant locations) are invited to give 30-40 minute presentations on their area of expertise.  Ample time for the audience to ask questions is always provided.  Leisurely lunch hours are also crafted into the planning of each meeting since the need for informal discussions and interactions are recognized to be an important part of these meetings.

The society seeks to maintain a dynamic existence and draws upon it board of councilors, as well as members, to suggest new and timely topics for each meeting.
