Margie Arkin, Meetings Assistant Margie joined the ASPET staff in March 2001. She assists Nancy White, meetings manager, in the society's annual meeting and other society-sponsored meetings held throughout the year including colloquia, symposia, and short courses. Margie fills requests for meeting materials, processes registrations for ASPET-managed meetings, and updates the speaker information database. Margie is responsible for processing all ASPET awards materials, including travel and best abstract awards. She also processes the SURF applications and maintains the Department Chairs and Pharmacology Program Directors databases. She assists with membership issues as needed and provides administrative support to the Executive Officer. She is a Pharmacologist by training and a member of ASPET. Christie oversees the operations of the Society and provides general staff support to all committees except Public Affairs and all Divisions except Systems and Integrative Pharmacology. She edits The Pharmacologist and serves as webmaster, as well as serving as the contact point for the Awards program and the SURF program. Bernstein, B.A., M.P.A., Director of Public Affairs Jim joined the ASPET staff in September of 1998. He serves as the primary staff liaison to the Committee on Public Affairs, and the Division for Systems and Integrative Pharmacology. Jim monitors legislation, policy statements, and government positions related to federal funding of research and other issues of interest to pharmacologists and identifies those areas where ASPET should be involved. In addition, he acts as liaison to other organizations supporting biomedical research. Jim is responsible for overseeing the ASPET-Merck Postdoctoral fellowships. Jim is the point person for ASPET activities related to herbal medicines, dietary supplements, integrative and organ systems sciences, open access publishing, and any other developing public affairs topics. He is the Senior Manuscript Coordinator for Molecular Pharmacology. Dan works with BenchPress to manage the myriad of details and information record keeping required in processing manuscripts through the review process to assure timely handling. He checks accepted articles for completeness and adherence to ASPET guidelines so the manuscripts move smoothly through production. As Journals Director for the Society, Rich is be the staff person responsible for administrative and policy aspects of journal management for ASPET's five journals. Rich can be contacted by phone at 301-634-7997, by fax at 301-634-7061 or by e-mail at: rdodenhoff@aspet.org Jill Filler, B.A., Managing Editor Jill joined the ASPET staff in December 2001 to manage the centralized manuscript office for Molecular Pharmacology and Drug Metabolism and Disposition, and for the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics when it came in-house in 2004. As Managing Editor for these three journals, Jill oversees the processing of manuscripts from submission through review. She and four Editorial Coordinators log in new manuscripts and send pertinent information to the journal editors, associate editors, and reviewers. Jill assures that papers are reviewed in a timely manner by tracking each manuscript through every step in the review process. She is the Senior Manuscript Coordinator for Drug Metabolism and Disposition. Molecular In(ter)ventions Dr. Nelson joined ASPET in April of 2002 as Associate Editor of Molecular Interventions. John is responsible for soliciting and editing manuscripts on topics at the cutting edge of research trends, for the Viewpoints section of the journal, and for developing and cultivating new departments and features for Molecular Interventions. 301-634-7918, by fax at 301-634-7061, or by e-mail at: jnelson@aspet.org Robert "Bobby" Phipps, Membership Assistant Bobby is responsible for maintaining membership records from the receipt of the membership application to the processing of membership dues and member subscriptions to The Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, Pharmacological Reviews, Molecular Pharmacology, Drug Metabolism and Disposition, and Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics. Bobby is also responsible for updating member addresses and other pertinent information, for processing all dues payments, for sending out mass e-mails to the Divisions or membership, and for responding to inquiries from members or individuals interested in becoming members. Smith, Ph.D., Editor, Molecular In(ter)ventions Dr. Smith came to ASPET in June of 2000 to be the first Editor of the Society’s newest publication, Molecular Interventions. Harry is responsible, together with the publication’s Editorial Advisory Board, for developing the content and directing production of each issue of Molecular Interventions. Harry solicits reviews and other material for the journal, edits articles received, conducts interviews for "CrossTalk," and provides suggestions for marketing of MI. Pat handles all billing and inquiries regarding page charges, manuscript handling fees, color charges, and reprints (including bulk orders) for The Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, Pharmacological Reviews, Molecular Pharmacology, and Drug Metabolism and Disposition. She also processes nonmember subscriptions to The Pharmacologist. She has served in this capacity since 1984 and is thoroughly familiar with all the financial procedures utilized by the Society. She assists the Executive Officer and other members of the ASPET staff with the financial affairs of the Society and in budget preparation and participates in the preparation for and meeting of the ASPET Finance Committee and the Investment Subcommittee of the ASPET Finance Committee. As Meetings Manager, she has overall responsibility for the smooth and efficient conduct of the annual meeting and other smaller meetings. Her duties include preparation of the information for the Program, support to the Program Committee, primary liaison with the meeting management staff, scheduling committee and divisions meetings at the annual meeting, arranging food and other society functions, ordering AV and computer equipment, ordering signage, and troubleshooting problems both ahead of time and onsite.
