Report of the Division for Neuropharmacology
October 1, 2000 to February 28, 2001

Meeting of the Society for Neuroscience. The division had two activities during the meeting, which was held in New Orleans in November. |
| |
 | For the second year, it hosted a 2-hour reception (at the New Orleans Marriott), this year together with the Division for Behavioral Pharmacology and the Student Chapter of ASPET. Mike Kuhar gave a short talk on the evolution of techniques for imaging receptors I the brain. Approximately 250 people attended the reception. Bud Cline was present to provide information about ASPET as well as applications for membership. The objectives of the reception are to raise the visibility of ASPET and its neuroscience-relevant divisions within the broader community of neuroscientists, to attract new members to ASPET and the divisions, and to energize current ASPET members who attend the meeting. |
 | The Executive Committee held an interim meeting. The luncheon meeting, at a restaurant convenient to the convention center, was well attended and productive. As the Neuroscience meeting falls approximately midway between Experimental Biology meetings and is attended by most members of the committee, it is an opportune time to bring the Executive Committee together. By holding an interim meeting, committee members who must miss an EB meeting need not go for two years without personal interaction with other members of the committee. In addition, the interim meeting facilitates timely decision making.

Experimental Biology 2001. The division is planning events for the meeting in Orlando in addition to the Executive Committee and Business Meetings. One is a student poster competition, which will be held on Saturday, March 30th. The other is a mixer, which will be co-hosted by the Division for Behavioral Pharmacology and held after the separate business meetings of the two divisions. |

The Program Committee accepted four of the nine division-sponsored symposium proposals for the EB 2002 meeting: |
|
 | Psychostimulant Action: The Dopamine Transporter (Jack Bergman and Michael O'Neill) |
 | Distribution and Functional Roles of Glutamate Receptors in Basal Ganglia: Implications for Treatment of Movement Disorders (P. Jeffrey
Conn) |
 | Mechanisms of Amphetamines in Eliciting and Regulating Monoamine Transport (Annette Fleckenstein and Michael O'Neill) |
 | Steroid Hormone Interactions with Serotonin Neuronal Systems (Joan Lakoski and Louis Van de Kat) |

Perspective in Pharmacology. The division proposed the following article for inclusion in the Perspectives series in
JPET: "Competitive Neuronal Nicotinic Receptor Agonists: A New Direction for Drug Discovery", by Linda P. Dwoskin and Peter A. Crooks. The proposal was accepted by the Editor; the article will be published later this year. |
