Neuropharmacology Division of ASPET
Executive Committee Meeting
November 13, 2001
1. Welcome: New members were welcomed
2. Approval of Minutes: Approved
3. Chairman's Report: No new items
4. Treasurer's Report: Budget is approved for our upcoming (2002) symposium- $800/speaker, $500 leftover will be used for refreshments. This year's budget will revert to ASPET if unused. Web page came in under budget.
5. Proposed budget for 2002: Budget will be based on membership, and can carry over from year to year. Everything was basically extrapolated from the previous year, except for the Web page. Main expenses: two socials, awards for students at FASEB meeting poster competition, Web page. We will spend the budget, but should be fine.
6. Career's in Neuropharmacology: Symposium for ASPET 2002 has been organized by Steve Holtzman. Solicited volunteer speakers from the membership and got many volunteers. Recruited 5 from different fields - moderators will be Israel Hanin and Steve Holtzman. They each will give 10 minute presentations, open for questions. Thirty minutes for refreshments at end. We need to find out if we can serve alcohol. We discussed whether to solicit questions beforehand- perhaps put them on the web site. Participants will be:
Kathryn Cunningham (University of Texas, Galveston): Triple Threat Academics in Medical School in the 2000
Robert Soltis (Drake University): Tenure Track Positions in Colleges of Pharmacy
Darryle Schoepp (Eli Lilly and Co.) Careers in Industry
Raymond Bartus (Alkermes Inc): Contrasting Scientific Careers in BigPharma, Development Stage/Start Up Companies and Academia
David Sibley (NINDS): Life in the Intramural Program of the NIH
Christine Carrico (ASPET) Alternate Careers in the Biosciences.
How to advertise? Post via student chapter, send emails to student members of other organizations? Cindy Kuhn will make posters.
How to provide feedback to those who volunteered? Steve will compose email to all Division members thanking them for the volunteer response, Israel will send at the appropriate time.
7. Neuropharmacology Division Website: Web site is up and running. Same person who did Molecular Pharmacology - Bill Jeffries at Creighton. Will charge $60/month to maintain- we endorsed that expense. It will need to reside on the ASPET web site- URL will change but Bill can still maintain it. Dave Sibley would love more content- brain image sites, personal web page links, etc. We discussed and rejected allowing advertising for non-ASPET journals
8. Nomination Committee Report: Congratulations to incoming President Marie Chesselet, Secretary/Treasurer Dave Sibley. Marie Francois sent out an email to membership 60 members volunteered to serve on a nominating committee. The 2 candidates for president are Cynthia Kuhn and Mike Kuhar. The two candidates for Secretary/Treasurer are George Breese and Mike Bannon.
9. Proposals for EB/ASPET 2003: We received 9, all of them late. One is recycled from last year (Nicotinic receptors from Narahashi). Question was raised: could Greg Gerhardt do a workshop on electrochemical detection. Cindy Kuhn will check with Lynn Wecker. Committee members need to send Israel your rankings.
10. Student awards/poster competition: The first action needed for the poster competition is to recruit judges. This should be started at least a month before the meeting. Steve Holtzman will send Cindy Kuhn the email used last year. Dec. 15 is the deadline for submitting applications for awards- Christie Carrico will send out emails in December reminding members to encourage their students to apply.
11. Postdoctoral travel awards/poster competition. We did not plan for one this year, but the committee was in consensus that we should do one next year (2003). Outgoing secretary/treasurer will do it, after the experience of runnings the student awards. It should be open to anyone within 3 years of postdoc. Cost- we need to check with Drug Metabolism but probably about $400 would be reasonable. Could we get industry to award the prizes? Jeffrey Conn will check- he needs to check with Christie Carrico, and then will contact several companies- hoping each will give $1,000-$1,500. Darryle Schoepp and Jim Barrett are possibilities.
12. Perspective in Pharmacology: Each division of ASPET can submit one yearly review article to JPET. We discussed potential topics/authors. The manuscript title/author is due June 1, 2002, manuscript due in September. Jeff Conn and Marie Chesselet will discuss how to do one on Parkinson's disease treatments.
13. Arrangement and agenda for tonight's Social: Still no speaker- John Harvey had to cancel at the last minute. Israel will give a brief welcome, introduce FASEB and IUPHAR meetings, mention student poster awards and introduce officers.
14. Request for support for DA 2002; Dave Sibley transmitted a request for support for the dopamine satellite for IUPHAR. We decided not to use monies from our budget for this request.
