ASPET MentorMatch

The ASPET MentorMatch program facilitates one-on-one mentoring relationships for ASPET members at all career levels. The program, powered by Qooper, provides step-by-step instructions, tools for goal setting, career resources and a unique algorithm to find the right match for your professional needs. ASPET members in good standing at all career stages are eligible to join the MentorMatch program. ASPET members must use their credentials to sign in.

This professional development program connects ASPET members and provides resources and practical support to build mentoring relationships. Our goal is to serve as your professional home for pharmacology while fostering an inclusive and diverse culture.

Mentors have the opportunity to develop leadership skills, give back to your professional society and the pharmacology community, support the career development of fellow ASPET members, and contribute your knowledge and perspective to the ASPET community.

Mentees can learn from another ASPET member’s perspective and expertise, receive support for your specific career goals, grow your network, develop your professional skills, and boost your confidence.

To receive a Certificate of Completion from ASPET MentorMatch, participants must collect three badges — Achiever, Mentoring and Learner — by completing the necessary requirements. Participants should expect to spend 10-12 hours total within a six-month period on various activities.

Take the next step toward furthering your career and your journey with ASPET! Watch the MentorMatch Focus on Pharmacology webinar here.

ASPET Mentoring Network: Coaching for Career Development

The ASPET Mentoring Network: Coaching for Career Development program is coordinated through the Mentoring and Career Development Committee. This program is based on a group coaching model and is designed for ASPET members who are graduate students and postdoctoral scientists. The professional development experience supplements the training that members receive through their university programs by developing transferrable skills needed to succeed scientifically, professionally and psychologically. The program design also incorporates discussion of the experiences and pressures faced by groups that are underrepresented in the sciences.

Members accepted into the 2025-2026 program will attend several events in association with ASPET 2025 in Portland, Ore. Training, guided discussions, an informal reception and an interactive program is held onsite. During this time, trainees meet the coaches and other trainees and become part of a six-person coaching group. Each trainee will also meet individually with their coach during ASPET 2025 and participate in virtual group meetings throughout the year, typically held as monthly conference calls or webinars. Group events are tailored to the specific needs of each coaching group but may focus on work/life balance, interview skills, job searches, networking, grant writing and other topics frequently identified as important to growth as a professional. Participants must attend all Mentoring Network activities during ASPET 2025 and be active with your coaching group for the following year. Applicants must be either graduate students who have advanced to candidacy or postdoctoral scientists. Abstract submission to ASPET 2025 is encouraged but not required.

Our group instantly connected with each other, and it was amazing to see how much we all had in common. We support each other and plan monthly goals, which motivates us to achieve them. Most importantly, sharing each other’s experiences helps us gain valuable insights.

Applications are open now. The deadline to apply for the next cohort is 11:59 PM ET on Monday, November 25, 2024. For questions contact Catherine L. Fry, PhD at cfry@aspet.org.

Because in-person attendance is required for this program, a limited number of travel awards will be available through the Mentoring Network to help defray travel expenses for those with significant financial need who do not have other support. You will be able to indicate your interest in one of these special travel awards during the application process. We also strongly encourage applications to the ASPET travel awards.

Partnering for Success

Partnering for Success, organized by the Young Scientists Committee, is a peer-mentoring experience at the ASPET Annual Meeting. This program matches more senior trainees (e.g., advanced graduate students or postdocs) with younger ones, in particular undergraduates and first-time meeting attendees. This program helps to provide a welcoming and supportive experience at the ASPET Annual Meeting where newer members can learn tips and tricks for navigating everything the meeting has to offer. Mentors and mentees are connected based on common interests and goals. No specific experience is required to be a mentor, except to have a desire to help someone else make the most of the Annual Meeting. While there is no expectation to continue these pairings after the Annual Meeting ends, many participants stay in touch and use this "meeting buddy" experience to expand their connections within ASPET.

You can apply to Partnering for Success as either a mentor or mentee during the ASPET 2025 meeting registration process. Registration is open now.
