This session will feature the Trainee Showcase oral presentations by young scientists. Graduate students and postdocs are encouraged to submit their abstracts to the Cardiovascular Pharmacology topic categories numbered 3005-3010 below to be considered for this competition. The session will also include award presentations from both the 2022 Early Career awardee and the 2022 Mid-Career Awardee. The 2020 awardee of the Paul M. Vanhoutte Distinguished Lectureship, Dr. Jan Danser from Erasmus Medical Center, will deliver the keynote address.

The Impact of E-cigarette Exposure on Platelet Function and Cardiovascular Health

Despite the decline in tobacco smoking, usage of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) has been rising since their introduction in 2007. This trend, which is mainly due to the provocative claim that they are/were a healthier alternative to tobacco smoking, has continued even during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our studies have documented that e-cigarettes, including in utero exposure, increase the risk of occlusive cardiovascular disease, by triggering a state of platelet hyperreactivity.

Swapnil Sonkusare - Univ of Virginia

Regulation of Blood Pressure by Vascular TRPV4 Channels

TRPV4 ion channels are crucial calcium influx pathways in endothelial and smooth muscle cells. Dr. Sonkusare will present new findings on the role of endothelial and smooth muscle TRPV4 ion channels in blood pressure regulation and pathological mechanisms that impair TRPV4 channel activity in hypertension.
