Letter from ASPET Presidents: ASPET Qualified Charitable Distributions

January 31, 2018

Dear ASPET member,

As your elected leaders of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET), we want to thank you for your membership and commitment to ASPET. The sustained support from members like you have enabled ASPET to offer training awards, like our very successful Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program that provides the monies to foster the development of young pharmacologists. Together, our efforts and the travel awards ASPET provides for young scientists (undergraduate, graduate and postdocs) to attend the ASPET Annual Meeting at Experimental Biology will help us to sustain and prevent the erosion of our discipline of Pharmacology.

Furthermore, our long-term mission is to also provide opportunities to all of our members in all stages of their careers; therefore, we are reaching out to inform you of donation opportunities to help us fulfill our long-term goals. One mechanism is to consider the use of qualified charitable distributions from your individual retirement account.

Federal legislation has permanently extended the Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) allowing IRA owners over age 70 ½ to make direct Trustee transfers from a traditional or Roth IRA to a qualified charity, such as ASPET, of up to $100,000, and exclude it from gross income for federal tax purposes. Since the withdrawal is excluded from income, the payment to the charity is not deductible as a charitable contribution deduction, but may be counted toward an individual's required minimum distribution. Please consult your tax advisor, if you have any questions or concerns.

Again, we thank you for your commitment and continued support of Pharmacology, and for helping ASPET toward a brighter future, one that advances pharmacology research, and increases the recognition and impact of our discipline.

For more information, or if you have any questions, please contact Matthew Hilliker at MHilliker@aspet.org or by phone at 301-634-7986.

Sincerely,

John, Eddie, Dave
