University Startups: From Invention to Commercialization

February 09, 2018

Are you excited about your novel and innovative idea to tackle a critical scientific problem and curious to know how to better translate science from bench to bedside? Or have you always wanted to launch a business around your most promising ideas?

Come and join us at the Young Scientist Committee (YSC)-organized interactive symposium workshop on "University Startups: From Invention to Commercialization" during the ASPET Annual Meeting at Experimental Biology 2018 on Wednesday April 25, from 8:30 am - 11 am. Learn the fundamental principles and the key challenges of launching a startup, covering everything from idea validation and market research to developing a pitch and obtaining the needed capital.

This symposium will introduce attendees to a blueprint on how to transform a laboratory scientific discovery into a viable biotech venture by providing an overview of the guiding concepts underlying technology commercialization, engaging in interactive case studies, and enabling networking opportunities with biotech and business leaders. In the first section of the symposium, a panel of biotech entrepreneurs will present on a broad array of commercialization topics such as market valuation, intellectual property, small business financing, technology commercialization resources, and effective business development. Panelists include Tom Parry from Skyline Biopharma LLC, Louis D. Lieto from local law firm Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, Kara Bortone from JLABS and Hugh Rosen from the Scripps Research Institute. The talks will be followed by a case study discussion session focused on the successful commercialization path for a pharmacological therapeutics technology and conclude with a networking session.
