Molecular Pharmacology Highlighted Trainee Author, June 2021

May 28, 2021

Joviano-SantosJulliane Vasconcelos Joviano-Santos is the Molecular Pharmacology Highlighted Trainee Author for the June 2021 issue.  Dr. Joviano-Santos is a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Biophysics at the Federal University of São Paulo, Brazil. Her mentor is Dr. Danilo Roman-Campos. The Molecular Pharmacology article that earned her selection as a Highlighted Trainee Author is titled “Ethnic-Related Sodium Voltage-Gated Channel α Subunit 5 Polymorphisms Shape the In Vitro Pharmacological Action of Amiodarone upon Nav1.5” and is available at https://doi.org/10.1124/molpharm.120.000176.

Dr. Joviano-Santos is currently working on evaluating the differential pharmacological modulation of natural occurring variants of the human cardiac sodium channel (Nav1.5) after exposure to commonly used drugs to treat cardiovascular disease.  Her research shows that amiodarone, an antiarrhythmic drug, has reduced pharmacological potency among four naturally occurring ethnic-related Nav1.5 polymorphisms.

The anticipated impact of Dr. Joviano-Santos’ research is that it may guide future studies identifying the efficacy of antiarrhythmic drugs in treating different types of arrhythmias and establishing individualized use of pharmacological therapies depending on Nav1.5 polymorphisms.

When not in the lab, Julliane enjoys drawing and painting. Also, she enjoys reading about mythology and astrology.
