ASPET Members in the News: Indiana University Adjunct Professor John A. Thomas Wins Society of Toxicology Founders Award

Professor John A. ThomasThe Society of Toxicology (SOT) has honored Dr. John A. Thomas, PhD, from Indiana University by presenting him with the 2014 SOT Founders Award for his pioneering contributions to human health and safety. Dr. Thomas was formally presented with his peer-nominated award on March 23, 2014 at SOT’s 53rd Annual Meeting and ToxExpo held in Phoenix, AZ.  

Dr. Thomas has made extensive contributions to the safety of pharmaceuticals and food ingredients through his long-term research that includes examining the pharmacologic and toxicological effects of xenobiotic chemicals such as pesticides, phthalates, and heavy metals on the male reproductive system, determining the safety of various sweeteners such as fructose, and testing biotherapeutic agents developed as substitutes for insulin and growth hormone. 

In addition to his research, Dr. Thomas has served as a mentor to students and faculty members through several university positions, published 400 peer-reviewed articles, authored and edited several textbooks, and served on the editorial boards of multiple prestigious scientific journals. He has been an ASPET member since 1995.
