Active learning approaches where students “learn by doing and thinking about what they are doing” have been established as being more effective than transmissionist approaches that rely on “teaching by telling.” This symposium will showcase three exemplars of innovative and contemporary active learning strategies which enhance learner engagement and experience as well as learning outcomes, including gamification and augmented reality in pharmacology education. The audience will experience these learning and teaching methods through brief interactive demonstrations.

Escaping the Didactic

The “Escape Room” session is a progressive case-based high-fidelity simulation activity incorporating simulators, puzzles, and clues to teach the pharmacology applicable to advanced cardiac life support. Working in small groups, the audience will engage in a simulated session to solve an iterative selection of pharmacology case-based puzzles.

Decoding Medication Tradenames: Connecting the Dots from Pharmacology Principles to Practice

Multiple strategies for ‘decoding’ medication tradenames will be demonstrated as exemplars for connecting corresponding key foundational pharmacology with their clinical applications. Through hands-on active team-based learning activities, the audience will participate using their smart phones including pre- and post-quizzes to assess their skills at ‘decoding’ tradenames after the demonstration of the teaching tool.

Meet the ‘Pharms’

An engaging pedagogical approach to teach pharmacology through anthropomorphization of commonly prescribed drugs will be demonstrated via a gamified learning challenge for the audience, who will participate in a pharmacology-themed Pokémon Go-type mobile game using freely available instructor/student software on their smartphones.
