This session will highlight oral presentations by young scientists doing research in Drug Discovery and Development who were selected from the submitted abstracts. Additionally, the session session will feature a keynote from the 2022 Scientific Achievement in Drug Discovery and Development awardee.

Maria Esteban-Lopez - Florida International University

Abstract #2398 - RXFP2 Small Molecule Agonists: Potential Therapeutics for Osteoporosis

Jonathan Yost - Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

Abstract #2181 - Analgesic and Antinociceptive Effects of (2R,6R)-hydroxynorketamine (HNK) in Mice

Grant Glatfelter - National Institute on Drug Abuse Intramural Research Program

Abstract #3639 - Receptor Binding Profiles and Behavioral Effects of Psilocybin Analogs

Colleen Niswender - Vanderbilt University

Perseverance in Academic Drug Discovery: Development of Positive Allosteric Modulators of Metabotropic Glutamate Receptor 4 for the Treatment of Parkinson’s Disease

This lecture will focus on small molecule preclinical discovery and clinical development for a strategy designed to mimic the efficacy of deep brain stimulation in Parkinson’s disease. The talk will span early target validation, small molecule lead discovery, iterative medicinal chemistry, drug metabolism, IND enabling work, and clinical studies. Along the way, we will use this program as a case study in working through the challenges inherent to drug discovery and development, particularly in an academic setting.
