Lisa Schlein is The Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Highlighted Trainee Author for the March 2024 issue. Dr. Schlein is an Assistant Professor, Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology Department at Colorado State University. The JPET article that earned her the selection as a Highlighted Trainee Author is titled “Parthenolide As a Therapeutic for Disseminated Canine Neoplasms” and is available at https://doi.org/10.1124/jpet.123.001851.

During Dr. Schlein’s residency at the University of Illinois, she worked with Dr. Timothy Fan, a medical oncologist and comparative oncology researcher, and by extension, members of Dr. Paul Hergenrother’s chemistry laboratory. While there she evaluated canine glioma as a model for human disease, as well as a novel activator of capase-3 (PAC-1), both in vitro and in a syngeneic mouse model of disease--research that ultimately helped to bring PAC-1 to clinical trials in humans. Upon returning to Colorado State University, she worked as a PhD student in Dr. Douglas Thamm’s lab evaluating the sesqueterpine lactone parthenolide as a treatment for a variety of hematopoietic tumors, some of which are deadly in both species and have limited treatment options.
