Official Rules

By participating in the ASPET journal covers contest (the “Contest”), artists (“Entrants”) agree to abide by and be bound by these Official Rules and the decisions of ASPET, which are final and binding in all matters relating to the Contest. Being selected as a prize winner is contingent upon fulfilling all requirements set forth herein. ASPET reserves the right to make non-material edits to images as needed in conjunction with the entry winner.

Eligibility

  1. Entrants must be 18+ years of age to submit an entry and be eligible for a prize.
  2. The Contest is open to anyone across the world.
  3. Employees of ASPET (also known as “Sponsor”) and its affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising, and promotion agencies and the immediate family members and/or those living in the same household of each such employee are not eligible.

Submissions

  1. Up to five (5) entries per Entrant are permitted. Submissions should be sent to ASPET Journals at journals@aspet.org no later than midnight on August 14, 2026, with the subject line “ASPET Cover Contest 2026.”
  2. Submissions should contain original photographs/micrographs/images related to the discipline of pharmacology that have visual appeal. A typewritten descriptive caption, no more than 250 words, must be included with the artwork
  3. An Entrant should include in their email their full name and contact information, including but not limited to their mailing address and phone number.
  4. Use of copyrighted material (images) or trademarks (company names, logos, brands, etc.) is prohibited.
  5. Plagiarized entries will be disqualified.
  6. Content must comply with all laws of the United States and must be appropriate for publication as the cover of a journal, as determined by the ASPET Editors-in-Chief in their sole discretion.
  7. Submissions must be solely created by the Entrant. Use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools or AI-assisted image generation is not permitted, in whole or in part. ASPET reserves the right to request information regarding the creation of any submitted work and to disqualify any entry that, in its sole discretion, violates this requirement.

Winner Selection

  1. On or about October 1, 2026, Sponsor, through the ASPET Editors-in-Chief, will select five (5) winning images based on aesthetics and suitability for an ASPET journal cover. Each selected Entrant will receive $250.00 USD for each image selected for the journal cover. Entrants may win up to five (5) times.
  2. Selection as a winner does not guarantee that the submitted image will be used as a journal cover. ASPET reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to determine whether any submitted entry is suitable for publication as an ASPET journal cover.
  3. If ASPET determines that no submitted entry is suitable for a particular journal cover, ASPET reserves the right to select alternative artwork from other sources, including prior submissions or previously published materials. In such cases, the Contest winner will still receive the stated monetary prize (provided all other conditions herein are met) and ASPET may instead choose to recognize such winners through honorable mention or other promotional use.
  4. Winners will be notified via email in October 2026.
  5. The prizes will be fulfilled by check. If a winner is located outside of the United States, ASPET will request information from that winner to facilitate a wire transfer.
  6. If a winner does not provide their mailing address or their wire transfer information, as necessary, ASPET will not be responsible for not fulfilling the prize for that winner.
  7. Sponsor reserves the right to use submissions not selected as a winning submission as part of this Contest for future journal covers. Sponsor will compensate each such Entrant at $250.00 USD per cover.

Submission Specifications

  1. The image should be 8.4 inches by 11.1 inches and at least 300dpi.
  2. The image should be provided as a .jpg, .tif, or .eps file.
  3. Entrants should view the colorful 2026 journal covers and consider the location of certain template elements (i.e., journal title, issue month/year, logos, side vertical color bar) when creating the image to ensure that any important part of the image would not be hidden by those elements.

Publicity Consent

Acceptance of a prize constitutes your consent to Sponsor’s and Sponsor’s publisher Elsevier’s use of your name, likeness, and art for promotional purposes in any media (including but not limited to social media), worldwide, in perpetuity, without further consent or compensation except where prohibited. If consent is required, you agree to cooperate and provide such consent.

Intellectual Property

  1. Entrants will retain all copyrights to their submitted work.
  2. By entering the Contest, you are granting Sponsor a non-exclusive, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, unlimited use license to reproduce images of your artwork on our website, in our print media, newsletters, exhibits, and/or any additional promotional materials. Any present or future requests for removal will be denied.

Prize Conditions

  1. BY ACCEPTING ANY PRIZE, WINNER AGREES TO RELEASE ASPET FROM ANY AND ALL LIABILITY WHATSOEVER FOR ANY INJURIES, LOSSES, OR DAMAGES OF ANY KIND CAUSED BY ENTERING THE CONTEST OR FOR DAMAGES OF ANY KIND CAUSED BY ANY PRIZE OR RESULTING FROM ACCEPTANCE, POSSESSION, MISDELIVERY, OR USE/MISUSE OF PRIZE AWARDED.
  2. Taxes.

    A. For winners who are U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or resident aliens, all local, state and federal taxes and/or any other fees/costs associated with the receipt of any prize are solely the responsibility of the winner. Any U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or resident alien winner who wins more than $600.00 will receive a Form 1099-MISC, if applicable, at year-end to summarize the amount of miscellaneous income that is being reported to the IRS.

    B. Winners who are non-resident aliens for tax purposes will be subject to all applicable tax, tax withholding, and reporting requirements, according to rules that apply generally to payments of U.S. source income to foreign persons. Any prize received by a non-resident alien may be subject to U.S. withholding taxes (generally up to 30%), unless reduced by applicable tax treaty. All non-resident alien prize winners will be issued a Form 1042-S at year-end to summarize the amount of miscellaneous income that is being reported to the IRS. Such winners could receive significantly less than the prize amount noted above.

  3. If a prize or prize notification is returned as unclaimed or undeliverable to a potential winner, if a potential winner cannot be reached within three (3) calendar days from the first notification attempt, or if a potential winner fails to return requisite documents within the specified time period, or if a potential winner is not in compliance with these Official Rules, then such person shall be disqualified and an alternate winner will be selected for the prize at issue.
  4. If necessary, the winner will also be required to disclose their social security number via a Form W-9 so that Sponsor can issue a Form 1099-MISC for tax purposes.
  5. By accepting the prize, each winner confirms that their participation in the contest and receipt of the prize does not contravene any applicable laws and regulations and any policies and rules of their employer or institution, including those pertaining to anti-bribery, gifting, conflicts of interests, and outside compensation, and that their acceptance of this prize will not influence, and is not intended to influence, any decisions that they might make on behalf of their employer or institution with respect to any business relationship with Sponsor or any of its affiliates.

General Conditions

Sponsor and each of its affiliates, subsidiaries, parent corporations, and their respective officers, directors, shareholders, employees, agents, successors, assigns and licensees are not responsible for any liability for losses, damages, or injuries arising in connection with an artist’s participation in the Contest, including but not limited to any failure of any submission to be received by Sponsor due to technical problems or human error; failure of any intended recipient to receive a prize; or printing or other errors.

Sponsor reserves the right to modify, suspend or terminate the Contest in the event that it becomes necessary due to circumstances beyond Sponsor’s control.
